New Monument Masterclass announced
A new Monument Masterclass to celebrate the centenary of the Representation of the People Act.
The Monument will open its doors after hours on Thursday 8 February for an evening with suffragette descendant and leading women’s rights campaigner Dr. Helen Pankhurst in conversation with London historian Dr. Matthew Green.
Attend this exclusive Monument Masterclass to mark the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918, which saw propertied women aged over 30 years gain the vote.
The event, which sees The Monument partner again with literary salon, 5x15, will explore how the lives of women in the UK have changed over the last century, and the enduring legacy of the suffragette movement. Dr. Pankhurst, great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst and granddaughter of Sylvia Pankhurst, and Dr. Green will discuss the extraordinary moment in 1913, when two suffragettes climbed to the top of The Monument to tie the distinctive purple, white and green Women’s Social and Political Union flag alongside a banner reading ‘Death or Victory’ to the railings.
This event is part of the Monument Masterclass programme, an exclusive series of one-off masterclass events and workshops will take place throughout the year.
Date: Thursday 8 February
Cost: £20 per person
